Shaped Crystal Growth
-- For reducing the losses in the machining and realizing the high resolution devices --
“Single crystalline materials” are used in various applications such as household utensils and related precision instruments of daily use.
Most of all the modern instruments are consist of various parts using single crystalline materials.
Therefore, they are considered as key materials for our daily life.
For example, in oura mobile phone, (1). IC chips are made of Si single crystals,; (2. ) GaAs single crystals are used as an amplifier; (3.), quartz single crystals are used as an oscillator.
All those devices are becoming smaller and the size of functional single crystalline materials, that is used in those devices, areis also getting smaller.

In our group, the way to make full use of the micro-pulling- down method, we are studying the combination between ultra-thin fiber and position sensitive detector. As the resolution strongly depends on the size (cross section) of the scintillator, the above mentioned combination can contribute the enhancement of the resolution.
At present, we have established the ultra-thin fiber growth technology of Bi4Ge3O12T crystals (around 100 mm in diameter). With these crystals, we believe we can reach near the theoretical limitation (100-200mm) of PET resolution.
